How It Works

Our calculator uses circle geometry to reveal the true size and value of any pizza — something your eyes can't do on their own.

1

Enter Pizza Details

Input the diameter and price for any two pizzas you're comparing. Works with inches or centimeters — just toggle the unit.

2

We Calculate the True Size

Using the formula A = π × r², we compute the exact surface area of each pizza — revealing how much food you actually get.

3

Compare Value Instantly

See the price per square inch, area difference, and a clear winner — so you always choose the pizza that gives you the most for your money.

✨ Why It Matters

Why You Need a Pizza Size Calculator

Your eyes are terrible at judging circular area. Here's why a calculator changes everything.

🧠

Your Brain Gets Circles Wrong

We instinctively compare diameters linearly. A 16″ pizza looks "a third bigger" than 12″ — but it's actually 78% more pizza. The calculator reveals the truth.

💰

Price Per Square Inch Is King

The sticker price is misleading. A $15 large at $0.075/sq in is cheaper per bite than a $10 medium at $0.088/sq in. Our calculator does this math instantly.

📐

Area Grows Exponentially

Double the diameter = 4× the pizza, not 2×. That's because area scales with the square of the radius. Even small diameter increases yield big area gains.

🍕

One Large > Two Smalls

Two 10″ pizzas (157 sq in) cost more but give less pizza than one 14″ (154 sq in). Stop buying multiple smalls when one large is almost always better.

🧮 The Formula

The Math Behind Pizza Sizes

A quick geometry lesson that will change how you order pizza forever.

How We Calculate Pizza Size

Every pizza is a circle. To find its true size, we calculate the surface area using the classic circle area formula:

A = π × (d ÷ 2)²
Where d = diameter of the pizza

For a 12-inch pizza: A = π × 6² = 113.1 sq in.
For a 16-inch pizza: A = π × 8² = 201.1 sq in.

That's 78% more pizza — not 33% more like the diameter suggests. To compare value, we divide the price by the area to get the price per square inch.

Pizza Area by Size
8″ Personal
50.3
10″ Small
78.5
12″ Medium
113.1
14″ Large
153.9
16″ XL
201.1
18″ XXL
254.5
The "Pizza Paradox"

Most people think a 16″ pizza is 33% bigger than a 12″ (because 16 is 33% more than 12). But circle area grows with r², so it's actually 78% bigger. This "pizza paradox" means you almost always get better value ordering larger sizes.

❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about pizza sizes, areas, and how to get the best value.

Use the formula Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². For a 10-inch pizza: π × 5² = 78.5 square inches. For a 14-inch pizza: π × 7² = 153.9 square inches. Our calculator does this automatically — just enter the diameter.
The best pizza size for two people is a 12-inch medium (113 sq in) or a 14-inch large (154 sq in). A medium provides 4 slices each (8 slices total). If you are hungry or want leftovers, order a 14-inch large pizza.
An 8-inch pizza has an area of 50.3 square inches (324 sq cm) and is usually cut into 4 slices. It is considered a standard personal size pizza meant to feed 1 person.
A 20-inch pizza is giant! It has an area of 314.2 square inches (2,027 sq cm), typically cut into 16 slices. A 20-inch pizza is 4 times larger than a 10-inch small pizza and comfortably feeds 8 to 10 people.
A 7.5-inch pizza has an area of 44.2 square inches (285 sq cm). It is common for personal size pizzas at chains like Domino's (Personal 7″) or Pizza Hut (Personal Pan), serving 1 light eater.
A personal size pizza is typically between 7 to 8 inches in diameter with an area of 38 to 50 square inches (4 slices). It is designed to satisfy 1 adult as a single serving.
A 16″ pizza (201.1 sq in) is 78% larger than a 12″ pizza (113.1 sq in). That's nearly double the pizza — not 33% more like the diameter suggests.
Divide the pizza's price by its area. For example, a 12″ pizza ($9.99) has 113.1 sq in, so the true cost is $0.088 per sq in. A 16″ pizza ($14.99) has 201.1 sq in = $0.075 per sq in — 15% cheaper per bite.
Almost always, one large pizza is better. Two 10″ pizzas = 157 sq in total. One 14″ pizza = 154 sq in — nearly the same food but usually 30–40% cheaper.
