12-Inch vs. 14-Inch Pizza: Medium vs. Large Compared

When looking at a pizzeria menu, moving from a 12-inch “Medium” to a 14-inch “Large” often seems like an inconsequential jump. It is just two inches of difference—about the length of a matchstick.

Yet in reality, that small two-inch increase in diameter produces a massive 36% increase in edible pizza surface area.

Understanding this circular area math is the key to getting the most food for your money every time you order takeout.

The Area Difference: Why 2 Inches Equals 36% More Food

Because pizza is a circle, its area is determined by the square of its radius ($A = \pi r^2$):

Pizza SizeDiameterRadius ($r$)Total Surface AreaArea Difference
Medium12 Inches (30.5 cm)6 Inches113.1 sq inchesBaseline
Large14 Inches (35.6 cm)7 Inches153.9 sq inches+40.8 sq in (+36.1%)

Even though a 14-inch pizza is only 16.7% wider, it gives you 36.1% more physical food.

To put that into everyday perspective, 40.8 square inches is more than half of an entire 10-inch personal pizza! You are effectively adding a half-pizza for the small price of an upgrade.

Slice Counts and Sizing Recommendations

  • 12-Inch Medium: Standard cut is 8 slices. Each slice has an area of roughly 14.1 square inches. It comfortably feeds 2 adults with normal appetites.
  • 14-Inch Large: Standard cut is 8 or 10 slices. If cut into 8 slices, each slice has an area of 19.2 square inches (approx 36% larger per slice!). It feeds 3 to 4 adults.

When Should You Choose the 12-Inch Medium?

  • You are ordering for 1 or 2 people with modest appetites.
  • You have very little refrigerator space and want zero leftovers.
  • The pizzeria offers a steep promotional deal on mediums (such as Domino’s Mix & Match).

When Should You Upgrade to the 14-Inch Large?

  • The price difference between medium and large is less than $4.00. (At almost all pizzerias, upgrading to large costs only $2 to $3 extra).
  • You want delicious next-day leftovers for lunch.
  • You are feeding teenagers, athletes, or hosting a gathering.
