How We Calculate Pizza Size
Every pizza is a circle. To find its true size, we calculate the surface area using the classic circle area formula:
For a 12-inch pizza: A = π × 6² = 113.1 sq in.
For a 16-inch pizza: A = π × 8² = 201.1 sq in.
That's 78% more pizza — not 33% more like the diameter suggests. To compare value, we divide the price by the area to get the price per square inch.
Most people think a 16″ pizza is 33% bigger than a 12″ (because 16 is 33% more than 12). But circle area grows with r², so it's actually 78% bigger. This "pizza paradox" means you almost always get better value ordering larger sizes.
